LeRoy White

2022 Dominique award recipient

Posthumously to Leroy White, honoring his great contributions to the arts community in Newport, RI

On Tuesday, June 21st, 2022, at the annual gathering for Raise Up the Arts, the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County announced the Soul & Conscience Award, a new award honoring LeRoy White. Created in partnership with the White Family, the award will be given annually to a musician, of any age or situation, whose life and/or art contributes to and connects the community with a message of harmony and love.

The annual winner of the Soul & Conscience Award will be given $2000 to use in any way.  No plan or project is required, but the White family and the Alliance will ask the honoree to describe his or her experiences, principally to help the committee promote the award opportunity in the community.

LeRoy came to Newport in 1977 and played with Channel One, Kahn and White and the History of Jazz.  He developed his own sound, which he labelled Ethnic, Urban, New Age with Soul and Conscience.  He took the Soul & Conscience Tour to every state in the country, but was deeply embedded in the Newport community and brought his music to concerts, parades, unexpected venues and everywhere that people gathered, playing and praying for peace and amity among people.  His family and the ACA honor his legacy by offering an award of $2000 each year, to be used in any manner, by a musician who embodies the spirit of Leroy’s gift to Newport and the world.
