MIKI OHLSEN

Miki Ohlsen studied dance in the Netherlands and returned to RI where she grew up, in 1979. She started a dance studio in downtown Newport and was soon hosting the rehearsals of the new Island Moving Company, a collective of choreographers seeking a forum for their work. She went on to become Artistic Director (initially elected to the post) and has led IMC for decades, establishing it as Newport’s only resident professional performing arts organization. Under her leadership, generations of Newport County schoolchildren have experienced curriculum-based movement programs in their schools.
